Love is in the air, and it's shining brightly on Broadway this Valentine's Day! A married couple, Hannah Cruz and Edred Utomi, are taking center stage in neighboring shows, creating a unique and heartwarming story.
But here's where it gets interesting... these two talented actors are not only sharing the spotlight, but they're also sharing their love story with the world.
A Match Made on Stage
Cruz and Utomi first crossed paths during the first national tour of 'Hamilton' in 2018. Playing the roles of Eliza and Alexander Hamilton, respectively, they couldn't help but notice the chemistry between them.
"For sure, we had that spark!" Cruz exclaimed, adding with a laugh, "He might not admit it, but I will!"
However, there was a catch. Cruz was in a relationship at the time, so they had to keep their feelings in check.
"I didn't want to cause any drama," Utomi explained. "But our connection was undeniable."
Fast forward to 2020, and Cruz's relationship had come to an end. During the pandemic, while Cruz was in New York and Utomi in San Diego, their virtual game nights and family Zoom calls brought them closer together.
"We'd stay up late, just talking and laughing. It was during those moments that I realized how special our bond was," Utomi shared.
And so, in August 2021, when Utomi visited Cruz in New York, their relationship took a romantic turn.
"I knew right then that I wanted to be with her," Utomi said. "So, I proposed a deal: If we date, we're getting married. It was a bold move, but I wanted to be clear about my intentions."
Cruz, a native of Newtown, Conn., recalled, "It was a surprise, but a wonderful one. I knew Edred was the one for me."
Their engagement story is just as romantic. Utomi popped the question on stage during his last night on the 'Hamilton' tour in 2023, with both their families in attendance.
"It was a magical moment," Cruz gushed. "Edred made it all about us, and I felt so loved and supported."
Since then, the couple has been captivating audiences and social media with their adorable displays of affection. A video of them waving to each other from their respective theaters went viral, with over 2 million views on Instagram and TikTok.
"It's been incredible to share our love story with the world," Cruz said. "And we're just getting started!"
And this is the part most people miss... there's a secret tunnel connecting the two theaters! Lin-Manuel Miranda, the creator of 'Hamilton', revealed this little-known fact and even promised to show it to the couple.
"We're excited to explore that tunnel and create more memories," Utomi said. "It's a hidden gem, and we can't wait to uncover its secrets."
So, as these lovebirds light up Broadway, we can't help but wonder: What other surprises do they have in store for us? Will they use the secret tunnel for a romantic intermission rendezvous? Only time will tell, but one thing's for sure - their love story is a true Broadway spectacle!
