A football legend walks into a classroom—and changes the conversation about education forever.
It was a day that the students of the Mahatma Jyotiba Phule Andhra Pradesh Backward Classes Welfare Educational Institutions Society (MJPAPBCWREIS) residential school in Kothavalasa will never forget. On Wednesday, November 26, 2025, they welcomed an unexpected yet globally celebrated guest: Sir David Beckham, the former captain of England’s national football team and UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador.
Beckham’s arrival turned the quiet school campus in Visakhapatnam into a stage for innovation in learning. He had come to witness firsthand how Project-Based Learning (PBL) is transforming classrooms through a powerful collaboration between Mantra4Change and Education Above All (EAA). This initiative, part of a wider effort supported by EAA, is actively redefining teaching practices in Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Odisha, and Nagaland.
But here’s where it gets truly interesting—Beckham didn’t just stand by nodding politely. He immersed himself in a real classroom experience. Seated among the students, he watched young learners debate, discuss, and problem-solve in groups during a PBL session. The activity wasn’t about rote memorization; it was about thinking critically and collaboratively. Following the session, students proudly guided him through an exhibition they had prepared, showcasing hands-on projects in English, Mathematics, and Science. Their work demonstrated how education could mirror the challenges and wonders of the world around them.
And this is the part most people might overlook—Beckham’s engagement went beyond observation. The children invited him to join a tree-planting ceremony, where they explained their eco-friendly system of tagging saplings with digital identifiers. Later, in the library, he joined a reading circle, listening to students share thoughts on stories that inspired their dreams. The four-hour visit concluded with a lighthearted football drill, where Beckham’s signature one-touch passes drew cheers and laughter from across the schoolyard.

Through the work of Mantra4Change, in partnership with the MJP Society and with the backing of Education Above All, a revolution in learning is unfolding across 107 residential schools in Andhra Pradesh. Reaching nearly 18,000 students and empowering as many school leaders, their Project-Based Learning framework integrates English, Mathematics, and Science into a cohesive, experiential method. Classrooms once centered on lectures are now buzzing with inquiry, creativity, and teamwork, as students tackle real-world challenges through projects.
Santosh More, co-founder of Mantra4Change, was quick to note the symbolic power of the visit: “Sir David Beckham’s presence is a huge motivation for educators and students alike. It signals that what’s happening in government schools today truly matters. PBL is not just improving how children learn; it’s elevating their ambitions.
