These posts included images of a ballistic vest and promoted violence, with the account's display name referencing the late IS leader, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi. Sturdivant believed he was communicating with a fellow supporter, but it was actually an undercover FBI agent.
The specific locations targeted in Mint Hill, a small community near Charlotte, are being withheld due to the ongoing investigation, as stated by Russ Ferguson, the U.S. Attorney for western North Carolina.
This isn't the first time Sturdivant has been on the FBI's radar. In January 2022, when he was a minor, officials learned of his contact with an IS member in Europe. He allegedly received instructions to carry out attacks with a hammer, and he did attempt to attack a neighbor's house before being stopped by his grandfather.
This incident is a stark reminder of the broader threat landscape. It follows other IS-inspired attacks, such as the 2015 San Bernardino shooting, where a husband-and-wife team killed 14 people, and the 2016 Orlando nightclub massacre, where a gunman fatally shot 49 people.
