Imagine paying for a qualification, only to discover it's utterly worthless! That's the harsh reality for some individuals who received bogus diplomas from an "equine massage service" – a company now in hot water for illegally using the Welsh government's iconic dragon logo. The Welsh government is cracking down on the unauthorized use of its official logo, and this "equine massage service" is just one of several businesses that have felt the heat. According to a BBC investigation obtained through a Freedom of Information request, the government in Cardiff has identified at least ten instances since 2020 where its brand was misused.
A government spokesperson emphasized the seriousness with which they view the integrity of their brand, stating that they take "robust action against any improper use." This isn't just about protecting a symbol; it's about maintaining public trust in information associated with the government. Think about it: if companies can freely slap the government logo on anything, how can citizens know what's legitimate and what's not?
While the Welsh government has remained tight-lipped about the specific identities of the other five companies involved, they did confirm that the "equine massage service" was indeed issuing fraudulent diplomas bearing the dragon emblem back in 2022. The fallout? Cease and desist letters were issued, the legitimate awarding body for equine massage therapy got involved, and students who received the fake certificates were instructed to destroy them. What a blow!
And this is the part most people miss... this wasn't an isolated incident. The BBC report details a pattern of misuse. In 2020, three other companies were caught selling fake diplomas adorned with the Welsh government logo. In 2022, three bogus Instagram accounts using the logo were shut down after being reported. Even more bizarrely, in the same year, a job applicant submitted a fake certificate for pool supervision skills, complete with the unauthorized logo, to a catering firm! Thankfully, the awarding body stepped in and ordered the destruction of the fraudulent document after the government was alerted. Then, in 2023, a company promoting energy efficiency services used the logo without permission in their Facebook advertisements. And in early 2024, another purveyor of fake diplomas received a cease and desist letter, leading to the takedown of their entire website.
The Welsh government expects its logo, which was created in May 2011, to be used on publications and materials where the government is a significant contributor to the project or scheme. Their official guidelines clearly state that the logo should only be used in black or white and must not be altered in any way. The guidelines highlight the significance of the logo, stating, "Our achievements matter to us, and we are proud to add our logo to all projects we are involved in, for example whether it's improving a community centre, building a new school, a hospital wing, improving roads or the surroundings of train stations."
This isn't the first time the Welsh government has had to defend its brand. In the five years prior to this recent crackdown, there were eight similar cases of unauthorized logo use, including one instance involving a company selling embroidered images of the ministerial dragon! It begs the question: is the current enforcement strategy strong enough to deter future misuse?
The Welsh government's vigilance in protecting its brand is undoubtedly important.
