The new Buffalo Sabres GM, Jarmo Kekalainen, has a bold vision: to build a championship team and end the franchise's long-standing Stanley Cup drought. But here's where it gets controversial...
In his first press conference, Kekalainen made it clear that simply qualifying for the playoffs isn't enough. He wants to win it all, and he's not afraid to say it.
"Winning the Cup is the goal," he declared. "I won't sacrifice our ultimate goal for a quick playoff berth. We have a plan, and that plan is the Stanley Cup."
Kekalainen's ambition is understandable given the Sabres' history. They haven't made the playoffs since 2011, the longest drought in the league. But is it realistic?
The Sabres have some talented players like Rasmus Dahlin, Tage Thompson, and Alex Tuch, but they've struggled to find consistency. They've had some close calls, like in 2022-23 when they finished just one point behind the Florida Panthers for a wild card spot.
"We're close," Kekalainen said. "There are a lot of good pieces here. We just need to take the next step."
But here's the part most people miss: building a championship team takes time and patience. It's a process, and sometimes, quick fixes can hinder long-term success.
Kekalainen seems to understand this, as he's not rushing into any drastic changes. He's evaluating everyone, from the scouting staff to the coaches, but he's also praising the current setup.
"Lindy Ruff, our coach, is a hard worker and a great leader. His resume speaks for itself, and I've enjoyed working with him so far," Kekalainen said.
So, will Kekalainen's vision become a reality? Only time will tell. But one thing's for sure: the Sabres are in good hands with a GM who has a clear plan and a championship mindset.
