Mohamed Salah's future at Liverpool hangs in the balance, and the upcoming conversation between him and manager Arne Slot could be the deciding factor. The tension is palpable, and the stakes couldn't be higher for both the player and the club.
Slot has confirmed that Salah's participation in the Brighton match on Saturday hinges on a crucial discussion scheduled for Friday morning. He also made it clear that he has no desire to see the star striker depart.
Salah's absence from the Champions League match against Inter on Tuesday was a deliberate move by the Liverpool hierarchy and Slot. This followed a highly critical interview after the Leeds game, where Salah hinted at a possible Anfield farewell before joining the Africa Cup of Nations.
"I will have a conversation with Mo this morning, and the outcome of that conversation determines how it will look tomorrow," Slot stated. He emphasized the importance of a direct conversation, stating, "What I need is a conversation with him, and the next time I speak about Mo should be with him and not in here."
Slot was cautious about delving into the specifics of the situation, but he did reveal that discussions had taken place with Salah's agent, Ramy Abbas Issa, prior to the Leeds game. "We have spoken a lot in the last week," he said, "After the Sunderland game, there were a lot of conversations between his representatives and ours, our representatives and him, between him and me, and today I will speak to him again."
When asked if an apology from Salah was necessary for his re-selection, Slot's response was a simple, "Same answer again."
It's important to note that the decision to exclude Salah from the Milan trip was a club decision, although Slot insists that he has the final say on team selection. He clarified, "I think we decided as a club – and I was part of that decision – not to take him to Inter Milan. I am always in contact with them, but when it comes to the decision-making of the lineup or the squad they always leave it open to me."
But here's where it gets controversial... Despite the recent controversy and Salah's public comments, Slot extended an olive branch regarding the player's future. "I have no reasons not wanting him to stay," he affirmed.
