A heartwarming tale of a beloved driftwood creature, Lizzy, has taken an unexpected turn as stormy weather swept her out to sea. This story, which may seem whimsical to some, has captured the hearts of the people in Porthcawl, Bridgend county.
The Logness Monster's Legacy
Lizzy, affectionately nicknamed the 'logness monster,' arrived on the shores of Porthcawl in March 2024. Over the past year and a half, she became an informal mascot for the town, bringing joy and smiles to locals and visitors alike. Her unique appearance, resembling a lizard, sparked imagination and a sense of wonder.
A Community Icon Disappears
However, the recent stormy weather proved to be too much for Lizzy, and she was carried out to sea. This sudden departure has left a void in the community, with hundreds of fans expressing their disappointment online. Some even described Lizzy as an icon, and they are heartbroken to see her go.
Steve West, a resident of Porthcawl, shared his thoughts: "It's very sad to see Lizzy go. She brought so much happiness to the town, especially to the kids who loved taking photos with her. It's a strange coincidence that a piece of driftwood ended up looking like a lizard and became such a beloved figure."
A Larger-Than-Life Character
Lizzy's presence in the town was more than just a piece of driftwood. She became a beloved character, with people constantly visiting her and taking photos. Chris Kitney, another resident, described her as a "big part" of the community. He noticed her absence first thing on Saturday morning and realized the impact she had on the town.
"People were always coming to see Lizzy, and she had a special place in our hearts. She even had a collection of coins wedged into her sides, and her eyes were a unique addition. I suspect my friends were behind that makeover!" Chris added with a laugh.
A Temporary Farewell?
While Lizzy's departure is a sad moment, there is a glimmer of hope. Chris believes that Lizzy might make a comeback, saying, "I wouldn't be surprised if she washes back up on the shore."
However, as of now, Lizzy appears to have broken up into pieces, losing her distinctive reptile resemblance. The local tourism office, Visit Porthcawl, confirms that Lizzy was an impressive 9.38 meters (30ft 9in) long and 2.46 meters (8ft 1in) tall.
Safety Reminder
Porthcawl RNLI shared a safety reminder, warning people to stay away from large breaking waves and cliffs during stormy weather. Safety officer Ian Cole emphasized, "Big waves can be powerful and dangerous, as seen with Lizzy. It's a reminder to always be cautious near the sea."
