Luka Doncic Takes the Blame for Lakers' Loss to Suns, Attributing 9 Turnovers - ESPN

LOS ANGELES -- The Lakers' seven-game winning streak came to an abrupt end on Monday with a 125-108 loss to the Phoenix Suns. Luka Doncic, the star player, took full responsibility for the defeat, citing his nine turnovers as the primary cause.
"It was my fault," Doncic admitted. "I can't afford to have nine turnovers in a game."
Doncic's performance in the first quarter was impressive, scoring 20 points and helping the Lakers tie the game at 31-31 with the Suns. However, the second quarter saw a sharp decline in his performance, as he committed four turnovers, matching his career high for the season. This was a crucial moment, as the Suns outscored the Lakers 35-21 during that quarter, taking control of the game.
Doncic explained the challenge he faced, "The defense was different from other teams. They were trying to let me score instead of creating opportunities for others, which was confusing. I can't let that happen."
The Suns' strategy, led by center Mark Williams, played a significant role in disrupting Doncic's game. Williams, known for his exceptional standing reach, dominated the paint, making it difficult for Doncic to operate freely. Lakers coach JJ Redick highlighted the impact of Williams' presence, "Mark Williams was a key factor. He's one of the tallest centers in the NBA, and he controlled the paint, making it hard for us to execute our plays."
Despite Doncic's 38 points, 11 rebounds, and 5 assists, the Lakers struggled with turnovers, which led to fast-break points for the Suns. LeBron James, who scored 10 points and had 3 assists, also noted the impact of turnovers, "Turnovers and transition points were crucial. On our home court, we can't afford to turn the ball over that many times against a disruptive defense."
The Lakers' upcoming schedule poses a challenge, with four opponents having records above .500, including a demanding East Coast road trip. Coach Redick emphasized the need for improvement, "We need to review everything, including rotations and strategies, to get back on track."
The Lakers' season record stands at 15-5, but the team must address their turnover issues and defensive strategies to maintain their winning streak.
