While Leonardo DiCaprio is now one of the most famous faces in cinema, with a string of critically acclaimed roles and a reputation as a selective actor, it's hard to imagine him ever being fired from a role. Yet, even before he made his screen debut, DiCaprio had already experienced a brush with rejection, albeit a minor one.
As a child, DiCaprio dreamed of becoming an actor, and his early career was marked by commercials and TV work. But before he even made his on-screen debut in two 1989 episodes of The New Lassie, he had already faced a career setback.
From 1953 to 1994, Romper Room was a staple of American households, a show geared towards younger kids and perfect for an aspiring child actor. DiCaprio, at the age of five, was cast on the show, but his time on the set was short-lived.
DiCaprio recalled his experience on Romper Room to Deadline, saying, "I have very faint memories of it, but I remember my stepbrother had dabbled in acting when he was young. Romper Room was the big hit show, and there I was. I remember running up to the camera, looking into it, and slapping it. They had to sit me down multiple times."
His excitability got the better of him, and he was eventually fired. "When the host said, 'Hey kids, it's story time', I am screaming, at the top of my voice, 'Yeah!' And then they fired me," he said.
Despite this early setback, DiCaprio doesn't hold it against the show. "I'm afraid I deserved it," he added. "They had to kick me out."
This brief encounter with rejection was a minor blip in DiCaprio's illustrious career, but it's a reminder that even the most successful actors have faced challenges and setbacks early in their careers. It's also a testament to DiCaprio's dedication and perseverance, as he went on to become one of Hollywood's most in-demand leading men.
