Unveiling the Emotional Toll: How Caregiving Burdens Shape Young Carers' Minds

The weight of caregiving often falls on the shoulders of the youngest among us, but what does this mean for their mental health?

As Japan's population ages, an increasing number of children and young people are shouldering the responsibility of caregiving. However, the psychological impact of this burden on young carers remains largely unexplored. To shed light on this critical issue, Professor Bing Niu and Dr. Ziyan Wang from Osaka Metropolitan University's Graduate School of Economics conducted a comprehensive study.

The researchers surveyed 1,581 young carers aged 15 to 19 across Japan in two rounds, one during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2021 and another in 2024, post-pandemic. The surveys aimed to understand how caregiving burdens affect the psychology and emotions of young carers. To measure psychological stress and subjective responses, the researchers incorporated the Kessler 6-Item Psychological Distress Scale and the Positive and Negative Outcomes of Caring questionnaire.

The findings revealed a concerning trend: young carers with greater care responsibilities tend to experience higher stress levels, with approximately 20% falling into the high-risk category. However, amidst the challenges, these young carers also reported positive emotions, such as a sense of accomplishment and pride. Interestingly, the 2024 survey unveiled a more nuanced picture, showing that both positive and negative emotions stemming from caregiving experiences were more pronounced than in 2021.

Dr. Ziyan Wang explains, "Even as the care burden persists, societal understanding and support for young carers have grown, and they themselves have begun to embrace their roles more positively."

Professor Niu emphasizes the importance of tailored support, stating, "While both positive and negative aspects exist in the caregiving experiences of young caregivers, it is crucial to develop support tailored to each individual's specific circumstances."

The study's findings were published in Scientific Reports, offering valuable insights into the complex emotional landscape of young carers. As the world grapples with an aging population, understanding and addressing the psychological impact of caregiving on the youngest caregivers is essential for their well-being and the development of effective support systems.
