SALT LAKE CITY — Step into Utah's newest landmark, the North Capitol building, and you'll find a seamless blend of modern design and historical elements. The building's atrium features a large LED screen, but its interior design draws inspiration from the iconic Utah Capitol and other surrounding structures. Mike Despain, project director at Okland Construction, highlights the use of similar marble types and architectural details, creating a cohesive and familiar atmosphere.
The North Capitol project began in 2022 with the demolition of the old state office building, addressing seismic concerns and a lack of harmony with the surrounding campus. However, the initial $165 million budget expanded to $320 million due to inflation and the desire for a more comprehensive facility. This transformation included the addition of a museum and storage space for the Utah Historical Society's valuable artifacts, previously housed in the Rio Grande Depot.
The building's design also incorporates a conference room accommodating over 700 people, new seating areas, and underground parking. The iconic laylight at the top showcases natural elements representing Utah's 29 counties. Andy Marr, director of the Utah Division of Facilities Construction and Management, emphasizes the building's longevity, stating, 'We talk about this building in very specific terms because we will never build this building again.'
The North Capitol building meets high sustainability standards and features a state-of-the-art base isolation system to protect against earthquakes. This system, designed by structural engineer Jerod Johnson, reduces seismic accelerations by 80%, safeguarding the building and its contents. Only a few buildings in Utah, including the Utah Capitol, have this advanced technology.
While the museum is not yet open, the Museum of Utah will debut a store in the coming weeks, offering Utah-themed art, retail items, and local food. State historians have prepared mounts for hundreds of artifacts, with over 950 items already selected for display based on public feedback. The museum will also showcase a replica of the golden spike and the iconic Mormon Meteor III.
The North Capitol building represents a significant investment in Utah's infrastructure, merging historical preservation with modern amenities. As the state celebrates its completion, visitors can anticipate a unique experience that reflects Utah's rich history and future aspirations.
