Grey Bruce Public Health (GBPH) is taking proactive steps to address this issue, which could potentially lead to suspension for students who haven't received their required vaccinations. While GBPH has been diligently working since the summer to help families bring their students into compliance with the Immunization of School Pupils Act (ISPA), many students still need to update their records. The act mandates that Health Units maintain and review immunization records for students within their jurisdiction, and school boards must enforce suspension if students have incomplete vaccine information or overdue immunizations, unless an exemption is granted. GBPH has already sent suspension notices to approximately 900 students in mid-February whose immunization records were still not up to date. Monica Blair, Program Manager for Vaccine Preventable Diseases at GBPH, emphasizes the importance of updated records, stating that they ensure students comply with ISPA and are not at risk of suspension. Additionally, updated records assist families during outbreaks, as students who are protected from vaccine-preventable diseases don't have to be excluded from class if one of the diseases is circulating at their school. To support students in bringing their records up to date, GBPH's Vaccine Preventable Diseases team will be holding vaccine clinics in several Grey-Bruce communities throughout March, including during the March Break.
